Changing Your Chevrolet Tires

Before you get started, you’re going to need the following tools: a jack, a lug wrench, wheel wedges, and a spare tire(s). You’ll also want to dig up your owner’s manual. Once you have all these tools collected, follow these instructions for an effective answer to your question, “how do you change a car tire?”:

1. If you can, move your car to a safe place on the shoulder of the road or to a nearby parking lot. Turn on your hazard lights.
2. Apply the parking brake and put wheel wedges under the other tires just in case your car rolls back when you jack it up.
3. As for the affected tire, use your lug wrench to loosen up the lug nuts that attach the hubcap, and thus the tire, to your wheel.
4. Use the jack to raise your vehicle and remove the lug nuts.
5. Remove the current tire and mount the new or spare tire.
6. Tighten the lug nuts, then lower your vehicle back to the ground.

How Often Should You Change Car Tires?

The answer to this question depends on 3 factors: how often you rotate your tires, the quality of tires currently on your car, and how much driving you do on x terrain.

If you rotate your tires regularly, they’ll have worn evenly, so there won’t be an unbalance of weight on your tires. If you don’t get tire rotations, it’s likely that 1-2 of your tires are taking much more weight from your vehicle than the others. Tread imbalance will wear down all of your tires more quickly. You can always measure the thickness of the tread of each tire with a penny. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to change your tires.

If you’ve noticed that your tires don’t hold air for more than a few days after you fill them up, chances are the treads either need plugs or you need a tire change.

How Many Miles Can You Go on a Spare Tire?

Don’t drive on your spare tire for more than 50 miles, and don’t drive at high speeds. Most will tell you how fast you can drive on them—usually below 45 miles per hour.
