Learn How to Reset a Check Engine Light

check engine light on

It can be so annoying when you’re driving through Williston and your Check Engine light illuminates. Once you’re sure there’s nothing wrong with your vehicle, sometimes the light doesn’t automatically turn off. That’s when you need to reset the Check Engine light. The service center at Ryan Chevrolet can teach you how to reset the Check Engine light.

Check Your Gas Cap

This might sound silly, but your Check Engine light might be telling you that there’s a problem with your gas cap. If it’s loose or cracked, that can signal your Check Engine light. Park in a safe spot, remove your gas cap and put it back on. When you start your car again your Check Engine light should turn off. If it doesn’t, keep reading.

Resolve Your Engine Problem

It bears repeating that, if your Check Engine light is on, you need to do just that — have your engine checked. Once the problem’s resolved then you can learn how to reset the Check Engine light. Ignoring your Check Engine light can be unsafe, or it can lead to bigger engine problems over time. When your Check Engine light comes on, schedule service as soon as possible so you can stay safe on New Town.

Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

Even if your engine problem has been resolved, the Check Engine light could still stay illuminated. That’s when you need to reset the Check Engine light. First, you need to disconnect the negative battery cable. Here’s the steps:

  1. Turn off the ignition and put on safety glasses and gloves
  2. Find the negative terminal on your battery. Usually, it has a black cap and a negative (–) symbol. The positive cap is red and will have a positive (+) symbol.
  3. Loosen the nut on the negative terminal with a wrench, then pull the negative connector from the battery. Keep it to the side for 30 – 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the negative cable and tighten it back up with your wrench.

Usually, this is all you need to do to reset a Check Engine light.
