The Silverado made a huge step forward in the 2022 model year with the Silverado ZR2 and it is about to make an even bigger step forward with the Silverado ZR2 Bison for the 2023 model year, which was just recently announced by Chevrolet. The momentum doesn’t stop there, though, because 2024 will bring in the first electric Silverado, which is a game-changing truck for the whole industry. The Silverado is the product of Chevy’s commitment to progress, development, and innovation, so let’s take a more in-depth look at the Silverado itself and these recent and upcoming developments.

Why the Silverado?

Some trucks try to impress with their bold features but cannot deliver the performance specs that their exterior suggests. The Silverado, on the other hand, delivers even more than its bold exterior would suggest. While Chevy is not necessarily known as “the trucking brand,” its identity as a General Motors division makes it a close relative of GMC, which is known as one of the lead trucking and SUV brands. Because of this, the Silverado offers the same power you would seek in your favorite top-level GMC trucks but with the stylishness of a Chevy.

The Silverado is one of the most versatile trucks on the market, performing at an exceptional level, specifically in towing and off-roading. We’ll get to the off-roading component in just a moment, so let us say a brief word on the Silverado’s towing capabilities. Aside from offering an impressive maximum towing capacity of 13,300 lbs in recent models, the Silverado makes towing even more hassle-free thanks to its premium towing technology.

The Silverado HD and LTD have eight available cameras, offering a total of fifteen available camera views, allowing you to have a truly holistic understanding of your vehicle, your trailer, and the surroundings from all different angles (even inside the trailer). The Silverado is about making things driver-friendly and work-friendly, with features such as the multi-flex tailgate, which allows you to do your work more effectively. Those are only the basics of the Silverado, but if you want to get into the nitty-gritty, let’s take a more detailed look. The Silverado has been making some changes lately, so let’s see what it’s up to.

The Silverado ZR2

Imagine taking the already-excellent Silverado and making it an off-roading vehicle. We’re not talking about a mere off-roading trim—the Silverado has had the Trailer Boss trim for years already—no, we’re talking about an entire vehicle transformation. That’s what happened for the 2022 model year. The Silverado ZR2 is no ordinary Silverado.

The ZR2 comes standard with the 6.2-liter V8 engine, which delivers 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Off-roading trucks are a special kind of vehicle because normal off-roading vehicles don’t have the added obligation of performing as a truck, so crafting a true off-roader that is also a true truck can be difficult. But the Silverado ZR2 does it and does it well.

To enable its off-roading capabilities, the ZR2 has adjusted its exterior architecture a bit, including a black chrome grille with a Chevy flowtie. We will repeat—flowtie. You all know the Chevy bowtie, but this special flowtie makes the bowtie part of the grille to increase airflow (and it includes accent lighting, just to make it look extra cool). A raised hood, new bumpers for extra clearance space (a 31-degree approach angle, mind you), underbody skid plates, and hidden dual-outlet exhaust all work to make the ZR2 ready at any moment for even the most brutal of trails.

The ZR2 is different in that a trim takes the same base vehicle as the other trim and emphasizes certain components, adds a few parts, and allows it to focus on a specific element of driving and performance (or design) but keeps the base integrity of the vehicle. The ZR2 is a completely re-imagined vehicle to take the Silverado to new heights. And it’s about to go even higher.

The Silverado ZR2 Bison

You may assume that there is no difference between the ZR2 and the ZR2 Bison or that the difference is negligible. While they are certainly similar in that they are both ZR2 Silverados, the Bison is a whole different ball game. We don’t have many specifics on the Silverado ZR2 Bison yet, but we can make some inferences based on its counterpart, the Colorado ZR2 Bison.

The ZR2 Bison is the product of an exciting partnership between American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) and Chevy. As the name suggests, AEV’s big thing is off-road innovation, and the ZR2 Bison’s big thing is overland driving. One of the Bison’s most immediately-noticeable adjustments is that it replaces the bowtie with “CHEVROLET” printed on the grille in flow-through letters, making it bolder in appearance and healthier in airflow (even healthier than the ZR2’s flowtie). The ZR2 Bison expands on the off-roading excellence of the regular ZR2 with five skid plates, AEV front and rear bumpers, and even an available AEV accessory snorkel for water-trudging. The ZR2 Bison is truly next-level.

While we don’t have all of the details on the Silverado ZR2 Bison quite yet, it is sure to get some special privileges of its own as the older brother of the Colorado. But, the traits of its little sibling are a good starting point for understanding just how exciting a truck the Silverado ZR2 Bison will be.

The Silverado EV

Electric vehicles are shaping up to be the future of automation. Aside from the argument of environmental friendliness, electric vehicles blow direct-injection performance specs out of the water, and they currently have a leg up on style and design. Using the all-new Ultium Platform to bring this new electric truck to life, the Silverado EV will offer 664 hp and 780 lb-ft of torque. That is over 200 more horsepower and over 300 more lb-ft of torque than its direct-injection record to date. Plus, you’ll be able to go from 0-60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds. You’ve never driven a truck like this before.

With the new Ultium Platform comes an all-new chassis design befitting an electric vehicle. So, to those of you not yet sold on electric vehicles, just know that this will be the highest and best Silverado the world has ever seen.

The Silverado is a vehicle that truly captures Chevrolet’s dedication to ongoing progress, development, and innovation. It is a great truck in itself, even in its standard trims. Even if the ZR2, the upcoming ZR2 Bison, and the upcoming Silverado EV were not in the picture, the Silverado would still be one of the best trucks on the market. But Chevy wants to find ways to turn good into great, and that is exactly what is prompting this rapid growth we see in the Silverado. There’s a lot to get excited about coming up. It’s an exciting time to be looking at a Silverado, and the driving game is about to be changed.
