How Does the 2024 Silverado 2500 HD Differ From the 2023 Model?

Many drivers are curious about the refresh to the 2024 Chevy Silverado, especially those interested in a Chevy Silverado 2500 HD for sale who are on the fence between the 2023 and 2024 models. The Silverado is one of the best work trucks on the market, and the HD line boasts best-in-class capabilities that make it excellent for tough environments. You might have heard whispers that the 2024 model has some notable differences compared to the 2023 models. And while the 2024 Silverado HD isn’t available yet, we have had a sneak peek at it and can confirm that there will be some differences you can expect.

If you’ve been hanging onto an old Silverado HD for some time and are ready for an upgrade, deciding to get the 2023 model available now or wait for the 2024 one is something on many drivers’ minds. With each new year, Chevrolet tends to fine-tune this truck, so it’s normal to wonder if holding out for the 2024 models will mean getting a better truck. Nobody likes to miss out on new truck features. The good news is that we feel confident that both the 2023 and 2024 models are solid options that won’t disappoint you. However, there are important differences to be aware of. Knowing these will help determine whether the 2023 Silverado 2500 HD or the 2024 Silverado 2500 HD is right for you.

Powertrain Updates

The engine options remain the same, with a 6.6-liter gas V8 and a Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8. However, one of the biggest performance differences you’ll notice right away in the 2024 Silverado 2500 HD is the new 10-speed automatic transmission. This is a big jump from the six-speed transmission of the 2023 model, which will be an interesting change in experience for drivers, as the 10-speed transmission triggered some additional changes.

Naturally, having that 10-speed could mean some more smooth transitions and access to more precise power in a variety of situations, like when towing and hauling. It’s going to be standard across all the 2024 Silverado HD trucks, so drivers should note if they prefer the six-speed, they’ll need to stick with a 2023 model. The addition of the 10-speed transmission has resulted in a modest payload drop on the 2024 model compared to the 2023 one. For the 2023 year, the max payload was 7,442 lbs, and for the 2024 year, it dips to 7,290 lbs. So, consider whether a 10-speed transmission is worth it for a modest payload drop.

Power and Heft

While the engines remain the same, their outputs have changed slightly. With the Duramax engine, we see a horsepower jump from 445 to 470 hp. We also get a torque jump on the diesel V8 from 910 to 975 lb-ft, a total of 65 lb-ft more. The higher horsepower and torque will mean better acceleration and more power (which is nice if you’re trailering or towing large items, especially uphill). Interestingly enough, while the 2024 Silverado HD is getting more powerful, some of the diesel varieties have a slightly lighter build. This will depend on the cab configuration and whether you opt for a two or four-wheel drive model. Meanwhile, certain gas-powered models will be slightly heavier due to the 10-speed automatic transmission (hence the lowered payload).

A New Look

You can’t help but notice the new fascia. While 2023 had the word “Chevrolet” engraved across the middle of the grille in bold letters, the 2024 model has scratched that in favor of a more subtle Chevy Bowtie. Neither is better or worse; this will just be a style preference on the part of the buyer. Drivers who love to show their brand loyalty might prefer the 2023 model with its bold look, while those who like something more subtle could be glad to see the look of the 2024 model.

Another style change is that the Midnight Edition, which was already a part of the 2023 lineup but not available for the High Country, will now be available on the trim. So, if you like the luxury trim of the Silverado HD and, in the past, regretted that it didn’t come in the Midnight Edition, your prayers have been answered. You’ll also notice some new C-shaped headlamps on the 2024 model, which look very cool when illuminated at night.

Minor Tech Changes

While the 2023 Silverado 2500 HD has 15 camera angles, the 2024 HD now has 14. However, what the 2024 lineup does have to make up for that one camera drop is a new transparent trailer view that works not just on conventional trailers but also on fifth wheel and gooseneck varieties. So visibility is still quite impressive on the 2024 option. The dashboard also gets a total refresh for the 2024 year. You get a wider touch screen that’s slightly angled down, and many controls have been minimized for a sleeker look. Some drivers prefer the larger, more traditional controls; for those, the 2023 dashboard will be comfortable to use. However, if you want a more minimalistic and futuristic-looking dashboard, you’ll probably find the 2024 one appealing.

Additionally, the driver information system has gone completely digital on the 2024 model and complements the sleek new infotainment touchscreen. The 2023 model has a more traditional drive information cluster. The main difference is that, on the 2024 model, you can customize what you see on this cluster and choose to omit certain stats. Meanwhile, on the 2023 model, the information displayed is comprehensive and unchangeable. Some drivers prefer this more traditional, all-inclusive driver info area, while others prefer to choose what is displayed there.

Traditional Charm Vs. Futuristic Flare

The great news is that whichever model year you opt for, you’ll get nearly identical capabilities. Since capabilities and powers are usually what drivers care about the most in a Silverado HD, we think Chevy was smart not to make many changes in these areas. A lot of the changes come down to style, and people will likely be torn between the 2023 and 2024 models. The 2023 model has the massive “Chevrolet” logo across the front, which some drivers love, while the 2024 one has the more subtle bowtie. Additionally, the 2023 model has pretty nondescript headlamps, while the 2024 one gets stunning C-shaped headlamps. And inside, the dashboard and driver information center is more modern and sleeker on the 2024 model than the 2023 one. Each one will appeal to its own respective driver.

The big upgrade we see is that new 10-speed transmission. It will be the only option if you jump to the 2024 model, and it mostly represents an upgrade, other than a slight drop in payload capacity for the V8 gas engines.
